Final photography workshop

Registrations for our final photography workshop, Creative Smartphone Photography, are now open.  We also have a couple of spots left in Street Photography, but you’ll need to be quick.

Creative Smartphone Photography – 28 October

Course overview

The course will cover:

  • What makes a good photo?
  • Indoor portrait session, focusing on lighting and composition (note: participants may each other as models, and agree not to share photos taken during this part of the workshop)
  • Outdoor walk, focusing on landscape and architecture
  • Smartphone camera features to help you get a better image
  • Uploading to Instagram.

What to bring

Bring your smartphone, tablet or camera. You may also want to bring a notepad and pen.

Course facilitator

Craig Wetjen is a professional photographic artist and author with 31 years experience. He began his career at the age of 16 as a photojournalist for the local newspaper Connecticut USA before moving to Santa Barbara California to study, and receiving his Bachelors Degree in Industrial Photography.

His career highlights include shooing for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories documenting the Mars Pathfinder and Cassini projects. He moved to Australia 20 years ago to play a pivotal role in establishing RMIT University’s digital imaging photography course.

Craig is a national and international award-winning photographer. He shares his knowledge, passion and creativity by teaching photography to Bachelor Degree and Diploma students, and running workshops.

In 2016, Craig published a photographic book documenting the iconic backyard shed.  ‘Men and Their Sheds’ is a collection of 101 portraits, and the stories of the men Craig photographed. The is available in bookstores across Australia, and a selection of the portraits were exhibited at the Kyabram Town Hall gallery earlier this year.

Street Photography – 21 October

Course overview

The course will be a street photography excursion.  It will cover:

  • Basic tips for getting the most out of your smartphone or camera
  • Developing deliberate composition skills, using lighting, perspective, foreground interest and depth, symmetry, negative space and framing within the frame
  • Selecting and editing final photos for use
You’ll also receive individual instruction relevant to your camera or device.

Course facilitator

Serana Hunt Hughes has over 20 years’ experience as a freelance, professional and contemporary photographer. She has had her work exhibited extensively, including an exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery, Federation Square, two solo exhibitions at Shepparton Art Museum. She’s also been selected for three solo exhibitions  at the International Head On Photo festival in Sydney.
